For our churches Good Friday service we were encouraged to think about what Jesus saved us from, saved us to, and saved us for. As someone that grew up in church and has considered myself to be a Christian my whole life, this question could actually be tough. Those of us who grew up in church and maybe didn't "stray" still have things we need to be saved from. I feel like what I needed to be saved from could even be worse than those "bad" things that other people do.
I had to be saved from comfortable Christianity. I grew up in a church where everyone was like me and I never felt encouraged to question or to look outside my circle. I always felt this tug towards more though. Being called to be like Jesus does not mean showing up to church on Sunday and being nice to people that are like you. Being like Jesus means going out into the margins. As I got older in late high school and throughout college I felt a serious shift in my thinking and in my faith.
I was saved from comfortable Christianity, to be like Jesus, for helping women who are hurting.
